What are splits?

Splits let everyone involved in a podcast or music release receive a share of listener payments.

Splits allow everyone behind a podcast or music release to receive a share of listener payments.

When a listener sends a Lightning payment, the sats are distributed across the configured splits. You can check the splits for an episode or track before you make a payment.

Managing Splits On Fountain

If you host your podcast or music on Fountain, you can manage both show-level and episode-level splits.

To manage your show or artist splits:

  • Go to Dashboard
  • Open Settings
  • Go to the Payments tab
  • Add, edit, or delete splits

To manage splits for a specific episode or track:

  • Open the episode or release while drafting or editing it
  • Scroll down to Splits
  • Choose to customise the splits for that item

Managing Splits For Podcasts Hosted Elsewhere

If your podcast is hosted elsewhere, you can still manage splits in the Fountain app after you claim your podcast.

To manage your default show splits:

  • Go to your Dashboard from the Main Menu
  • Open the menu for your show
  • Press Manage Show Splits

To manage splits for a specific episode:

  • Open your Dashboard
  • Choose an episode from the Episodes tab
  • Open the menu next to the play button
  • Press Manage Episode Splits

When adding a split, you can:

  • Add a Fountain user
  • Add a Lightning Address
  • Add a Lightning node pubkey

After adding a split, you can edit its percentage. If your split percentages add up to more than 100%, listener payments are still distributed proportionally.

How Many Splits Can I Add?

You can add as many splits as you like. However, if you have a lot of splits, listener payments may take longer to process and listeners will incur a fee for each split.

Should I Tell My Listeners About My Splits?

Yes. Letting listeners know where their money goes can make them more likely to support the show.
